Some interesting facts about the inability of modern professional cameras.

It may surprise you that with today’s technology, photos don’t look that great. In the industry we have a term “out of camera”. That is what the image looks like after being shot by the camera. It will surprise you that an “out of camera” image needs a lot of work before it can resemble what you remember from the shoot.

Our eyes are wonderful things. Together with the immense processing capacity of the brain, we see thing so much different than camera’s do. This is called “Dynamic Range”. Imagine sitting at a kitchen table in the middle of the day. The room is dimly lit because there is only a small window and the door is closed. Sitting there, your eyes are capable of seeing everything in the room clearly and yet, you can still see a car pulling up outside quite clearly. This means that the human eye can distinguish between very dark and very light areas in the scene. A modern professional camera on the other hand, will adjust for either the dark or the light area. It is simply not capable of seeing both at the same time and thus have a very low “Dynamic Range”

It is estimated that if the human eye was a camera, it would cost around Thirty Five Million Dollars.

Coping with The Low Dynamic Range of a camera

As a photographer, when shooting a wedding for instance and time is of the essence, you can’t tell every one to FREEZE for a moment. You learn to instantly access the scene, look at high and low contrast areas and adjust the exposure for what is important in the scene. The rest will be fixed in post production (editing)

We have all heard that simple phrase “Photoshop it”. Yes you can do a million things in Photoshop and also Lightroom but, if the important subject in a photo is massively under exposed there is no “fixing it”

Lets take a bride having her makeup applied. She sits in front of a bright window and there is simply no space for the photographer on the other side to actually make better use of the natural light falling on her face. You can take the photo from outside through the open window but the room is on the upper floor of a very posh hotel, and they don’t take kindly to you putting a ladder on the outside of the building.

This is where you expose correctly for her face and let the window be just a bright white part of the image, and then edit that as best you can. You could use “High Speed Sinc” flash photography but I won’t get into that here.

If however the exposure was incorrect and the window was exposed correctly, the bride would be just a dark silhouette. Adjusting the exposure in editing to see her face correctly simply won’t work. Even on high end professional camaras, there is a thing called “Noise” So pushing the exposure up in Photoshop will result in a horrible looking photo.

HDR – High Dynamic Range Photography.

When time allows and we have a tripod available (or a seriously steady hand), we can explore the wonderful world of HDR. In short, HDR is taking many photos of the same scene, each at a different exposure. Then you combine these photos in HDR software to give the best exposure for every part of the scene combined into one single image.
